About Happy Penguin Press

Handmade Letterpress Happiness

Happy Penguin Press is a small letterpress company based in Birmingham, AL. It began a few years ago in much the same way as other paper companies: as a fun hobby. Its owner and head paper aficionado, Ashley Leath, began designing websites in high school for fun. Creativity and its many forms had been a part of her life since birth: Both of her parents are painters, and Ashley grew up traveling the Southern California coast as her parents sold their art at outdoor art shows. Eventually, her web design hobby led to designing promotional materials for her parents’ art gallery, and thus, design met paper. A love affair was born. She’s been obsessed ever since.

Of course, getting married only fueled the fire. Thankfully, her partner in crime and now husband, Bryan, is supportive of his wife’s obsessions. A great appreciation for art doesn’t hurt either.

Thus began a quiet love affair of paperie between a husband and wife, she, a paper- and words-loving obsessive, and he, a numbers-crunching environmental engineer. They both love clean design and thoughtful words. After designing wedding stationery for friends and family (and themselves), they decided to put together a collection of their own. When they’re not printing, Bryan can be found cheering on his favorite soccer teams while Ashley pursues her love of fiction writing.

What's New with The Happy Press

The Blog

Happy Birthday, Happy Penguin!

Today, this dear Penguin of ours turns two. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since we opened our doors, but here we are. We’re ever so thankful, too. We’ve grown from a little place that sold a few cards on Etsy to being carried in one of our favorite local stores (Three…

How To Stencil an Accent Wall – Studio Reno Part 2

When we left off in our last post, we had just painted our teal studio with Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray, and our soon-to-be accent wall with Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White (tinted at 50%). Now we were ready for the first of our two fun projects: painting a stencil on our accent wall! First off, full…

Our Studio Reno – Part 1

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to break out the paint! If you follow us on Instagram, then you already know that we bought a home in October. One of the things we loved about the house was the studio space for Happy: a big room over the garage with interesting architecture and lots of potential.…

Pumpkin Spice Cake

As many of you know, we love to bake. And baking is especially enjoyable during the fall, when the weather is cool and spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and allspice take on fresh scents that beckon to the holidays. We’ve been baking with pumpkin lately, experimenting with various cake recipes for a bake-off we participated in.…

Happy Penguin + West Elm

This story begins two years ago. When Happy Penguin was in its infancy, Bryan asked me what my goals would be for our little company. I didn’t have to think about it. I knew. I’d want our cards to be in my favorite stores: West Elm and Anthropologie. One day far down the road, if…

In Which We Explain Where We’ve Been This Summer

Guys. It has been so long since we consistently posted here. We had such big dreams! And then…life came along, as it has a habit of doing. But now that things have calmed down (relatively), we wanted to take a moment and recap our summer for you. Because friends do that kind of thing, and…
