Letterpress Wedding Invitations and Art Prints

Letterpress Wedding Invitations and Art Prints

Long time no see, friends! It’s about time we updated you on our comings and goings, don’t you think? We’ve been busy planning our holiday cards, as well as with some fun custom work.

These two-color art prints were printed for a family who love dandelions using the colors of their home. We love how delicate the dandelion artwork turned out!

We were also thankful to be approached by the ever-talented Kristen of Pen Meet Paper. Kristen needed someone to print her wedding invitations, and we were more than happy to help! Not only did we get the chance to work with Kristen’s lovely hand-lettering, but we got to print in a color that reminded us of UNC blue (as Tar Heels, we didn’t need any more reason to like that!).

Kristen paired them with a beautiful monogram.

We don’t do much custom work, so any time we get to work with people on something special, it’s always so much fun. We’re diving into holiday work now, so stay tuned for more news!

In case you missed it yesterday, Happy Penguin was featured on the fabulous blog Buttermilk Lipstick yesterday.

Buttermilk Lipstick (isn’t it a cute name for a blog?) is Rebecca’s home base on the Internet. She’s an amazing cook and total football fan (especially the SEC). Her blog often makes me itch to get in the kitchen and whip out my baking pans. Head over and check it out!

Happy Birthday, Happy Penguin!

Happy Birthday, Happy Penguin!

Today, this dear Penguin of ours turns two. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since we opened our doors, but here we are. We’re ever so thankful, too.

We’ve grown from a little place that sold a few cards on Etsy to being carried in one of our favorite local stores (Three Sheets, Homewood, AL), our local West Elm, Front & Co. in Vancouver, and just this week, The Paper Project in Australia. We never saw this coming!

So to celebrate, we’re releasing a new card and art print in three colors featuring a quote by the Avett Brothers. Appropriate, don’t you think? Celebrate with us: All orders today get 25% off and a special gift! Use code HAPPYTURNSTWO.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making these first two years so wonderful for us. We couldn’t do it without your support, and it means the world to us.

Much love,

Ashley and Bryan

Happy Penguin + West Elm

This story begins two years ago.

When Happy Penguin was in its infancy, Bryan asked me what my goals would be for our little company. I didn’t have to think about it. I knew. I’d want our cards to be in my favorite stores: West Elm and Anthropologie. One day far down the road, if that could happen, I’d be as happy as could be.

We didn’t spend our time purposefully moving toward this. We spent it on Happy. We developed cards that we loved, and tried our hardest to keep that as the main goal. Whatever happened, happened.

That’s why when I received an e-mail one day out of the blue, it took my breath away. I would have been excited about the news whether we were involved or not: West Elm was opening a Birmingham, AL, location. Hallelujah! For me, this meant no more driving to Atlanta or paying for shipping whenever I shopped at West Elm. But there was something even more exciting in that e-mail…

West Elm wanted to know if they could carry our work in their Birmingham store.

We can finally announce that our work is now (eeeeekkkk!) available at the brand-new location of West Elm, located at The Summit mall in Birmingham, AL. We’ve been keeping this a secret for ages now, and it was soo hard not to spill the beans to you all. We feel incredibly blessed to have this opportunity, to fulfill a dream that really was just that—some morning ramblings over tea and toast, when Bryan asked me a random question about far-away goals. Who would have thought it would ever come true?

If you live in the Birmingham area, please come out and support the local artists that West Elm partners with. We hope to see you there. We’ll be the embarrassingly giddy ones standing next to the letterpress cards, drying our happy tears on our sleeves and pinching ourselves silly.

In Which We Explain Where We’ve Been This Summer

Guys. It has been so long since we consistently posted here. We had such big dreams! And then…life came along, as it has a habit of doing. But now that things have calmed down (relatively), we wanted to take a moment and recap our summer for you. Because friends do that kind of thing, and we like to think that you guys love us as much as we love you.

Out of everything that happened this summer, those of you who follow us on Instagram may have noticed a few noticeably sad posts. We didn’t explain. We were getting through the moment. Suffice it to say that my dad has been very ill and spent 20 days between August and September in the ICU, 14 hours away from where we live. We’ve been making as many trips to see him as we possibly can, and all that time away has meant later nights operating the press, completing new designs (three new Christmas cards are in the works!), and packaging orders. Thankfully, things have calmed down now, and my dad is doing much better. Life is better when your loved ones are healthy and happy, don’t you think?

In the midst of this, we’ve been exploring our options to expand our Happy Penguin working space. (We need more surface space. We have paper out the wazoo!) We’ll hopefully have more news about this in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

When we were in the studio, we were busy printing and delivering cards to our local Birmingham, AL, suppliers Three Sheets and atHome, designing holiday cards (including a soon-to-come Halloween card designed by Bryan) and two new baby cards, and printing baby announcements for some wonderful friends.

And on top of all of that, we have some seriously big news that we aren’t quite ready to share yet. But it’s pretty big. Like, dreams-coming-true-makes-us-cry-happy-tears kind of big.

So thank you for supporting us, for following us, and for being as awesome as you are. We’ll be back soon (promise) with our super-big news and some new card designs too!

Umba Box Surprises

A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to receive an e-mail from the kind folks over at Umba Box (soon to be known simply as Umba). If you aren’t familiar with Umba, it’s a monthly subscriptions service that sends a box of delightful handmade items to their subscribers each month. Isn’t that a wonderful idea? What a fun way to treat yourself or someone you love every month instead of just once!

So, Umba reached out to us. They explained that they had a last-minute opening, and would we like to contribute some cards to be included in an upcoming box? The turnaround time was super-duper quick, but we managed to provide them with some Happy Little Note cards, and are so happy that we were able to be included!

bluehappynote1So, if you’ve never heard of Umba, I encourage you to check them out. And thanks to Umba for reaching out to us! We were so happy to be included and share our work with their subscribers.

Happy Penguin Celebrates One Year!

Happy Penguin Celebrates One Year!

Who would have thought, but time has flown. Today marks our first birthday! We can’t believe where a year has brought us…

…97 Etsy sales
…a visit to the Ladies of Letterpress conference in beautiful Asheville, NC, in August 2012
buying our own press!
…mentions on countless blogs such as Fellow Fellow, The Petit Cadeau, Discover Paper, and Oh So Beautiful Paper, to name a few
…a shout-out on Southern Living magazine’s Facebook page and blog
…which led to printing something for the magazine’s March issue!

And now, we turn one. Any one year old knows that one is a very big year, and Happy is hoping that the same will be true for us. We couldn’t have made it this far without those who have supported us—you! So from the bottoms of our hearts…

birthday3As an added bonus (and because as much as we really want to bake you a cake to celebrate with us, that’s hard to do over the Internet), we’re giving you a little something extra: 25% off! (Use code “HappyTurnsOne” when you check out.) And right in time for some new work (greeting cards! an art print! baby announcements!!) that we’re launching next week! I know, I know, our squeals are kind of annoying. But we’re excited, and we just can’t help ourselves.

Thanks again for making our first year so special!
